Origin Prompt #2 - Life of a Cuscus
The Woodlark archipelago is a beautiful group of islands off the coast of Papua New Guinea. The largest island simply known as Woodlark or Muyua has a small population of humans, with animals aplenty outnumbering them. Often shrouded in mist, the dense forests that cover the island are dark and mysterious, full of untold tales of both the people and animals that live there. Birds flit and call by day, and at night bats and frogs come out to play. One strange mammal also exists on this island. It is a marsupial with mottled white and brown fur almost like the mist that shrouds its home. Large eyes, a powerful nose, and a long, prehensile tail lends well to a nocturnal lifestyle in the trees. The Woodlark Cuscus (Phalanger lullulae). This fascinating marsupial is poorly studied due to its secretive nature as well as declining numbers in the wild. The IUCN Red List labels the Woodlark Cuscus as endangered and many threats to this animal and truly the island exist. Many organizations

There was a chill in the air. Summer was ending, and fall was settling in. The leaves were a rusty orange and deep red and had already fallen and littered the ground. A stray deer roamed the outskirts of a cemetery that was nestled in the forest, looking for whatever green vegetation still remained under the leaves. Every step the deer took caused a rustle and crunch as it moved through the leaves and Morrigan the Esk could hear other creatures moving in much the same way, all stocking up for the winter ahead. She turned from the creatures, moving deeper into the cemetery she called home. She wove between the spaced out tombstones, many half crumbled into the leaves. Even though to some, especially on Halloween, the old cemetery might seem unnerving, to her it was peaceful and welcoming. She leaped onto an old stone wall and walked along it. A squirrel chittered its aggravation at her presence and hopped down, scurrying behind a tree. It chattered from afar for a bit, then went back

Natura Humana Ch. 4: Decisions
Po felt the world shift again, rushing towards something. Po squeezed his eyes shut as tight as possible, afraid of what he would see. As the movement stopped, he could smell the old musty house, and heard the scurrying of mice in its walls. He opened his eyes, and there was the collar as he had found it: left against the side of the house, silver tag worn. No bark greeted him, no thunder of hooves in the field, or laughing of children. The place was becoming one with nature as vines crawled over the house’s roof and the rock wall lost height each day. This place was precious once, but that feeling was only fleeting it seemed. Po’s heart hung heavy in his chest as he moved towards the barn. His gecko moved out from his hiding spot under Po’s mushroom and nestled into the short fur on his forehead, cooing out noises of comfort. The gecko knew of Po’s past, or at least what Po could remember and had the courage to tell. Of how he was once a pampered dog in the life of luxury. Of treats

Natura Humana Ch. 3: Explorations
Po bent down to the collar, nudging it with his nose. Suddenly he felt the world spinning under his feet. It was as though he was both running faster than he had ever run before while also standing completely still. The world jolted to a halt, and he felt his very being shudder within him. As he got his bearing, Po realized the sun had shifted to be high above him. All around him was green grass and the warm smell of a lively farm. Horses grazed in the pasture behind a tall, hand-laid brick wall. He turned to the house which bustled with the sound of a lunch being prepared. Rowdy children were just inside, bickering about whose turn it was to feed the pigs. Po hesitantly poked his head in the doggie door once more and found kibble and fresh water where before there had been only empty bowls. A cat hissed at him and with a mad dash through the kitchen nearly tripped a hard-working mom as she brought food to her children. She wagged a finger at their dirt covered bodies and ordered a

With the strange Wanderer gone, Po relaxed somewhat. He glanced around the barn, trying to imagine what it might have once been like and what it was that the Wanderer had seen in this old place. Perhaps horses had been stabled here, and the weedy expanse he had crossed to get here had been a healthy pasture. How long had it been? How many people lived here, and how many generations had worked the land? Po wandered through the barn as his gecko familiar crawled down his leg and ran up a nearby wall to disappear amongst the cobwebs. In one corner stood a broken broom and rake. In another, a pile of rusted buckets with one wall behind them crumbled away and plants pushing their way in. Looking up found many holes in the ceiling and dappled light shining in, giving the feeling of being underneath a great tree canopy. There was a loft on one short end of the barn, though the steps leading up to it had long fallen. Po cautiously approached the underside of the loft, inspecting the darkness

Natura Humana Ch. 1: Abandoned
Po sat up suddenly, drool-like inky goop splattering from the folds on his face. He gazed around his apartment, unsure what woke him up. He had been dozing peacefully under the side table near the couch while cozily curled up on his favorite blanket when he could’ve sworn he heard a slight whisper. Something itched at the back of his mind, and when a couple good kicks from his back leg didn’t fix it, he stretched and moved about the apartment. All was quiet with the humans that inhabited it gone for the day. Po’s familiar, a small Mediterranean house gecko, scampered down the wall and stared at him unblinkingly for a moment before leaping onto the mushroom on Po’s back. From this perch the two of them went through each room, checking for intruders. When none were found Po plopped down heavily in the middle of the living room. Annoyingly, his mind still itched somewhat. Gazing out the glass door leading to a small balcony, Po caught sight of something shiny sitting on the balcony’s
